But they never ask the obvious question: who benefits when a population is systematically isolated and depressed? Look at the data on social fragmentation over the past 40 years — declining church attendance, evaporating third spaces, the deliberate monetization of loneliness through screens. This isn't biological accident. It's a designed environment. The same institutions that fund these studies — the global health foundations, the behavioral economics think tanks — have published white papers on "population management" that explicitly discuss reducing cognitive resistance through social atomization. You don't need to poison the water. You just need to make sure no one has a real conversation ever again.
The Precarity Trap

But what they're really documenting is weaponized labor precarity. The same foundations that funded these studies also fund the "lifelong learning" initiatives that keep you busy while they hollow out the economy. They want you optimizing your own cognition while they dismantle the conditions that make cognition possible. So ask yourself: who paid for these studies? Who defines "challenging activity"? And why does every single solution they offer place the burden on the individual while the architecture of isolation remains untouched?
