Global Glacier Extinction Explorer Lets You Look Up When Any Glacier Will Disappear
Researchers from ETH Zurich and Vrije Universiteit Brussel have launched the Global Glacier Extinction Explorer, an online map covering more than 211,000 glaciers, allowing users to see each glacier's projected disappearance under 1.5°C, 2°C, 2.7°C, or 4°C of global warming. Individual glaciers can be searched and selected to show their area, elevation, and likely disappearance period, with map colors indicating how long each glacier may persist under a given scenario. The tool also invites users to check whether a glacier they visited in childhood might still exist in 2050 and how limiting warming could change its fate. The explorer is based on a recent study published in Nature Climate Change.
The Map That Counts Your Future Down
They've launched a website to show glaciers dying on a calendar. At first glance it looks like science outreach—harmless, interactive, even melancholy. But you need to ask why now and who built it.
