UNEP Report Warns Global Warming Will Exceed 1.5°C Threshold, Urging an ‘Overshoot, Peak and Decline’ Pathway
The United Nations Environment Programme’s latest report confirms that the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement will likely be crossed within the next few years or by around 2030, as the planet already nears 1.4°C above pre-industrial levels. It outlines an “overshoot, peak and decline” scenario where warming rises above 1.5°C, peaks at about 1.8°C, and is later driven back below 1.5°C by 2100 through rapid emissions cuts, a fossil-fuel transition, and large-scale carbon dioxide removal to achieve net-negative emissions. The report warns that even a temporary exceedance will bring decades of intensified weather disasters, sea-level rise, extinctions, and risks to food, water, and health, while UN Secretary-General António Guterres and UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen stress that the 1.5°C goal “must now be approached from above.” This is the first UN agency assessment to state unambiguously that the 1.5°C target will be breached, and it calls for a fundamental reconfiguration of climate governance to prepare for an overshoot pathway.
The Managed Overshoot

The same fossil fuel companies, hedge funds, and biotech firms that sit on the boards of the World Economic Forum and the UN Foundation. They're not planning to save the climate; they're patenting the solution. Once they've convinced the world that emissions cuts alone are insufficient, they will sell you the cure. The "overshoot, peak, and decline" pathway is a financial instrument dressed up as climate science. It creates a century-long revenue stream for carbon removal credits, geoengineering patents, and land-use permits. And who will suffer most? The same populations already being told to eat less meat, fly less, and have fewer children. The elites will fly private jets to Davos while you pay a carbon tax on your heating bill. The report's own co-author, Debra Roberts, admits "none of our plans are prepared for that" overshoot—but that's a lie. Their plans are very prepared.
