Astronomers Capture Clearest Image of Betelgeuse’s Long-Suspected Companion Star
An international team led by Miguel Montargès of the Observatoire de Paris used the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile to obtain the sharpest image yet of a faint object likely orbiting Betelgeuse, the red supergiant in Orion. Published July 28 in Astronomy & Astrophysics, the detection—made with the SPHERE high-contrast imager on December 3 and 6, 2024—provides the strongest visual evidence for the long-suspected companion, called Betelgeuse B, which appears more massive than previously estimated at about two to three times the Sun’s mass. Unlike earlier indirect hints, astronomers directly detected the companion’s own light, and they now plan to track its motion over the next year to confirm its six-year orbital period and explain Betelgeuse’s regular brightness variations, which ancient Egyptians and Indigenous Australians may have observed thousands of years ago.
